The Curious George Reading Program

Curious George is set to help your child make the first step to reading success! The world’s most beloved (and curious) monkey will take you and your child on a fun-filled adventure at the library where you’ll explore the wonderful world of books. The reading program incorporates reading and sharing books together with fun-filled activities you can do with your child to support early literacy development. The single most important activity for raising a successful reader is reading aloud with your child!

Stop by the Children's Room to pick up your Curious George Reading Program bag to get started (while supplies last). Each bag contains a free gameboard, sticker and bookmark. Each week the library will have a new craft and early literacy tip to share with participating families. There are incentives for adults and children alike.

The program is both a Read With Me program for children who do not yet read on their own, and an Early Reader program for beginning readers. Being ready to read starts with babies – no child is too young to sign up!

TumbleBooks for iPad/iPhone 4!

TumbleBooks are now available for the iPad and the iPhone 4!

Tumblebooks is an online collection of animated, talking picture books by well-known authors and illustrators. TumbleBooks are created by taking existing books and adding sound, music and narration to produce an electronic picture book which children can read, or have read to them! In addition to enjoying TumbleBooks at the library, the books can be accessed at home by going to the Children’s Room section of the library website (www.CoventryPL.org) and clicking on the Tumblebooks icon.

You can check out the first batch of iPad-compatible TumbleBooks by visiting the Booth & Dimock Memorial Library's TumbleBooks Link on your iPad and going to the Story Books section. There are currently 44 iPad books to choose from!

Just below the "Story Books" heading, there is a link called "Click here for iPad-compatible titles". Click on this link, and the iPad books will be sorted for you. Now, simply click on the "iPad" button to launch the book of your choice! The book will appear in a small window at first, but to expand, simply click on the "full screen" button.

In the coming months, iPad content for the entire TumbleBooks animated picture books collection will be created!

Adopt-A-Shelf!

The Children's Room is always busy and our books see a lot of use. If a book is not put back in its correct place, it can be lost for a very long time. That's where you come in!

An Adopt-A-Shelf volunteer is responsible for straightening, organizing and maintaining a designated section of the library (don't worry - we'll train you). YOU can help make it possible for our patrons to find the books they are looking for. Volunteers should be able to commit to a 3 month "adoption" period, for at least one half hour every 2 weeks. For every completed term of our Adopt-A-Shelf program, the Children's Room will add a nameplate dedicated to the volunteer on one of our new books or audiovisual materials.

The Adopt-A-Shelf program makes a great family activity! Stop by or call the Children's Room to find out more about this great volunteer opportunity!

Each year during the last week of September libraries across the country celebrate Banned Books Week, an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. This year Banned Books Week runs from September 24 - October 1.

September 13 is Roald Dahl Day! Mr. Dahl, author of such fabulous books as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda (and many others) was born on Sept. 13, 1916 in Llandaff, Wales. Did you know that he coined the word "gremlin"?

This year, however, is particularly special because it is the 50th Anniversary of one of Roald Dahl’s best loved stories, JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH!

Visit the Children's Room and check out our Roald Dahl book display and take home a "scrumdiddlyumptious" book by Roald Dahl!

You can also:
1. Wear something yellow (Roald's favorite color).
2. Give someone a favorite book - wrapped in newspaper and tied up in string, just like Roald used to do!

Babygarten is a fun and exciting program for children ages 0 to 2 and their caregivers!

Babygarten runs in multiple 6-week sessions during the year, and requires registration for each session. Space is limited!

The next 6-week session begins on Tuesday, September 13 @ 10:15 AM - the dates are as follows: Sept. 13 & 20; October 4, 11, 18 & 25. Registration is open!. Call 742-7606 to register.

What is Babygarten?

Infants and their caregivers will share nursery rhymes, songs and books, but also get a chance to make fun projects that demonstrate the children's developmental milestones - usually a homemade toy or a baby book item.
Many projects and activities will emphasize the importance of reading to babies and parents will learn how to do this most effectively.
The class concludes with a free play period.

The program includes:

Nursery Rhymes and Songs – Infants in the womb are soothed by the ever-present beat of a mother’s heartbeat. Babies of all ages still respond to a steady beat no matter what form it takes – rhymes, music, windshield wipers, dishwashers, etc. Rhymes also provide interesting repetition of the sounds we use in everyday language. Using familiar rhymes on a regular basis encourages your child to make sounds and eventually form first words.

Book Sharing – We’ll read books in unison (yes, the same ones over and over!) and the librarian may recommend books that are most popular with babies. For infants, a book represents the closeness of being held and the soft sounds that come from a familiar person. Eventually, they will understand how a book “works” and that the black squiggles somehow correspond with the sounds the reader makes. These are all pre-literacy skills that better prepare your child for a lifetime of learning.

Parenting Information – Questions about infant development and parenting often arise during the Babygarten program. We welcome your questions and will do everything we can to help you find answers. Sometimes the best source is the person sitting next to you on the floor!

Handmade Toys and Mementos – The playthings that babies enjoy most are always the least expensive ones. You’ll have the opportunity to construct simple, effective toys from items we all have around the house. Also, to help you remember the fleeting moments of your child’s babyhood, we’ll make some items that are perfect for grandparent gifts or the baby book.

Free Play Period – At the end of each session, we’ll do what we THINK comes naturally to all caregivers. Playing is how babies learn and your involvement can enhance their enjoyment and enlightenment. It’s fun to see how other people play and how babies respond to each other. This is where some of your best discoveries will originate – either through observation or conversation (with babies and adults!).

Drinking Water is available free at Capt. Nathan Hale Middle School lot. (Additional ice has been requested but is not yet available…If we get some it will be next to the water truck…two bags max.)

September 1: Pasta Dinner at 5:00 Coventry High School Cafeteria provided by UCONN Women Basketball (600 meals).

Showers are open at Coventry High School 6:00 A.M. to 9:00 Thursday and Friday & 6 A.M. to 1 P.M. on Saturday and Sunday. Enter through the Auditorium entrance on side. Bring own towel and toiletries.

Food waste (only) will be accepted at transfer station free of charge Saturday between 9 A.M. and noon.

Brush and limbs (only) will be accepted free of charge at Town's South Street Extension Gravel pit (Turn onto South Street Extension from Main Street and continue straight past Miller-Richardson ball fields down the hill, turn right into the pit. Look for directions to pile). No town wide brush pick up is planned. Do not place material at road edge.

The boil water order only applies to the Pilgrim Hills neighborhood due to a construction accident, not related to the storm.

Limited meals ready-to-eat and bottled water will be available at pasta dinner.

CLP is predicting at least 1,000 households in the lake area may have power restored tonight. In the Northern end of town CLP is estimating 99% restoration by Sept. 2. and 100% BY Sept. 3. Please call CLP at 1-800-286-2000 to report your outage and track the restoration projection.

We want to remind our summer reading program participants that there is still time to do a lot of reading - the program ends on Thursday, August 18. there's not much there at the moment except a cryptic "Coming Soon."

For a little more info, check out J.K. Rowling's YouTube announcement page at

Today is International Children's Book Day (ICBD), which is celebrated annually on or around the April 2 birth date of Hans Christian Andersen. Celebrate ICBD with a trip to the library for books about children from all over the world! Children's books can help children to learn about people from other countries, learn to appreciate and respect other cultures, and learn to get along with others. ICBD is sponsored by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY). The IBBY Web site states, "International Children's Book Day (ICBD) is celebrated to inspire a love of reading and to call attention to children's books." NUTMEG BOOK AWARD 2011 WINNERS ANNOUNCED

From the Nutmeg Book Award Committee:
The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies tops this year’s Intermediate list and Unwind by Neal Shusterman took the Teen level honors for the 2011 Nutmeg Book Award. This award encourages children in grades 4-8 to read quality literature and to choose their favorite from a list of ten nominated titles. Jointly sponsored by the Connecticut Library Association (CLA) and the Connecticut Association of School Librarians (CASL), the Nutmeg Committee is comprised of 2 teen readers, children's librarians and school library media specialists who are members of our sponsoring organizations.

Almost 27,000 students from 408 schools and libraries voted in total. 4,215 students picked Davies’ story as their choice, while 1,536 teens chose Shusterman’s novel as their favorite. Gordon Korman's Swindle, and The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd, earned second place honors in the Intermediate and Teen categories, respectively.Visit http://nutmegaward.org for more info!

In Memoriam: Brian Jacques

Brian Jacques, beloved British author of the Redwall series of books, passed away on Feb. 5 at the age of 71. You can read a brief bio about Mr. Jacques at KidsRead.com. The Redwall books have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, and have been published in 28 languages. The Rogue Crew, another Redwall novel, is scheduled for publication in May of this year.

You can check out the Redwall books from the library! They are fantastic adventure tales of good versus evil, and feature walking, talking animals such as otters, squirrels and mice. They are geared toward ages 9 and up, and many grown-ups are big fans! For fans who may not already know, the books were also made into an animated TV series spanning 3 seasons (Redwall, Mattimeo, and Martin the Warrior). You can check out Seasons 1 &2 on DVD from the library.

Well, today is Groundhog Day, and it seems that neither Punxsutawney Phil (the nation's official weather-forecasting groundhog) nor Chuckles (CT's own) saw their shadows - which means an early spring! Hmm. Rather hard to believe considering the current conditions, but good news!
